The Scent
Bois d’Encens opens with a cool, camphor-spicy breath of black pepper and frankincense — not the sweet incense of a head shop, but the green, smoky resin of a centuries-old chapel. As it settles, a dry cedarwood heart emerges, polished and austere, like lacquered pews or a freshly carved chess set, grounded by a whisper of earthy vetiver. It dries down to pure frankincense and labdanum — warm, resinous, and quietly spiritual. This is a deliberately minimalist composition, and that restraint is exactly its power: nothing shouts, everything resonates.
The Collection
Bois d’Encens belongs to Armani Privé, Giorgio Armani’s haute couture fragrance line — and it’s one of the original four scents from the inaugural 2004 launch, and the only one of that quartet still in production. Composed by Michel Almairac, it’s widely said to be Armani’s own signature, inspired by the incense of his childhood Sunday services. It now sits within the Les Terres Précieuses collection in the signature black-lacquered bottle.
