So… What Is Indult?
Indult is Francis Kurkdjian’s first love — the house he launched in 2006, years before Baccarat Rouge 540 became a global phenomenon. The name comes from Medieval Latin indultum — a special privilege granted by a king. And honestly? That’s exactly what wearing Indult feels like.
Kurkdjian set one rule: 999 bottles per fragrance, period. No exceptions, no reprints, no mass-market concessions. When those 999 sold, the scent vanished. The house went quiet for years — then in 2013, new owner Kim C. Charles stumbled across the line by chance, fell hard, and revived it with the original formulas intact. Today Indult operates as a boutique house: five fragrances, each built around a single exceptional material, made in small batches by a perfumer who doesn’t answer to marketing briefs.
It’s minimalism as luxury. It’s the indie band that never sold out. It’s the perfume house for people who’d rather smell like something real than something loud.
Why Indult Stands Apart
The perfumer is the point. Most niche brands hire a rotating cast of noses. Indult IS Francis Kurkdjian — every fragrance, every formula, every batch. What you’re buying is a line of work from one of the greatest living perfumers, unfiltered and uncompromised.
One material, explored deeply. Indult doesn’t do complex pyramids with 40 notes fighting for attention. Each fragrance picks a star — Tahitian vanilla, lychee-rose, Indian plum, leather, jasmine — and builds an entire world around it. The result isn’t simple; it’s focused. Like a single-origin coffee or a one-ingredient dish at a three-star restaurant — everything has to be perfect because there’s nothing to hide behind.
Small-batch, still handmade. When Kurkdjian created these formulas in 2006, he wasn’t thinking about supply chains or shelf life — he was thinking about the smell. That purity survived the revival, and it’s still baked into every bottle.
The Fragrances
| Fragrance | Character | Perfect For |
|---|---|---|
| Tihota | Pure Tahitian vanilla — creamy, edible, angelic | Vanilla obsessives. Anyone who wants to smell like warm cookies and clean skin. |
| Manakara | Lychee-rose explosion — juicy, candied, pink | Fruity-floral lovers who want something genuinely exotic. |
| Isvaraya | Indian plum and patchouli — dark, jammy, mysterious | Those who want fruit that bites back. Not sweet — sensual. |
| Cuir 404 | Supple leather — smooth, understated, sophisticated | Leather lovers who don’t want smoke or aggression. |
| My Ju-ju | Jasmine soliflore — lush, indolic, unapologetic | White floral purists. If you think jasmine can’t be a standalone star, this will change your mind. |
All Indult fragrances are Eau de Parfum concentration, 50ml, and priced at $299 AUD. Tihota is available now from Sydney stock — the rest are available via special-order (3 weeks).
