Inspired by Proust’s madeleine — that single bite unlocking a flood of memory — Carlos Benaïm’s 2024 creation drops you straight into a Parisian café where warm pastries and vanilla drift through the air. It’s the newest gourmand in the Replica line and easily the most creative.
The opening is nutty and bittersweet: almond and angelica root giving way to an actual madeleine accord — buttery, cake-like, unmistakably pastry without being sugary. The heart softens into whipped vanilla cream and ambrette, with a subtle earthy-carrot nuance that keeps things interesting. The drydown is warm sandalwood, Madagascar vanilla pod, and clean musk. Sweet but not cloying. Indulgent but wearable. An everyday escape rather than an evening statement.
A word on the sandalwood: it’s prominent, and if you’re sensitive to certain sandalwood molecules (Javanol, we’re looking at you), it can read spicy or even pickled. Hardcore gourmand lovers expecting a sugar bomb may find it too restrained. Longevity is solid at 5-7 hours. The reviews are split — people either call it “cozy and elegant” or “boring and faint.” Sample if you can.
