This is not the vanilla you know. Vanille Antique opens cool and almost metallic — a sheer musk laced with faint boozy plum — before settling into a minimalist heart of pale white wood and resinous labdanum. The vanilla that emerges in the drydown is dry, smoky, and raw — closer to a vanilla pod split open than any extract or dessert. Wrapped in warm amber, it wears close to the skin with a soft, introspective projection. This is vanilla as contemplation, not comfort food.

Launched in 2022 as part of Byredo’s Night Veils collection and composed by Jérôme Epinette, the original Vanille Antique was discontinued in 2025 when Byredo reformulated the entire line. The new version adds florals and oud — a more complex but fundamentally different fragrance. This 50ml old edition is the minimalist original, increasingly scarce and sought-after.
