The perfumers behind our bottles

Niche houses rarely put the perfumer's name on the box, but the name is the best guide to what you will like. Here is who composed the bottles we stock, from Byredo's Jérôme Epinette to Mith's Elodie Durande, with the bottles each made.

Most of the perfumes we sell were composed by a few dozen people who work for the big fragrance labs, Givaudan, Firmenich, IFF, Symrise and Robertet, and whose names move between a $47 Thai bottle and a $500 European one. If you love one bottle, the perfumer is a better clue to the next than the brand. Below, every perfumer named on our product pages, with what they made for us in stock. Full bottles only; most of the Mith, To Summer and Chasense ones are also available as 2 ml samples.

Jérôme Epinette (Robertet)

Byredo’s house perfumer since the first bottle in 2006, and the nose To Summer briefed for its signature scents. If you like Gypsy Water or Blanche, To Summer Triple Tea and Nude are his work too, at a third of the price. The airy, slightly cold transparency is the common thread. Byredo · To Summer.

Elodie Durande (Symrise)

The One Fine Day collection for Mith Bangkok is hers: Thai Tea, Mango Sticky Rice, Thai Pomelo, Lemon Ice Tea, as well as Twilight and the discontinued Strawberry and Cream. Her style is photoreal: the scent smells like the thing, not like a perfume about the thing. The most searched perfumer on this site by a distance. Mith Bangkok.

Delphine Jelk (Guerlain)

Guerlain’s in-house perfumer alongside Thierry Wasser, and the author of most of the L’Art & La Matière bottles we carry: Fève Gourmande, Iris Torréfié, Shalimar Millésimé Jasmin. Rich, polished, classically French; the testers are the affordable way in. Guerlain.

Quentin Bisch (Givaudan)

The perfumer behind Mugler Alien Goddess and most of Amouage’s recent hits (Guidance, Purpose, Decision, Existence) also made Mith Bangkok Nude, our best-selling skin scent, for $62. Van Cleef & Arpels Neroli Amara and Mith Autumn Leaves are his too. The Amouage bottles are out of stock; register your interest on their pages. Mith Bangkok · Amouage.

Aliénor Massenet (Symrise)

Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club, the best-selling men’s gourmand of the last decade, and most of Memo Paris: Inlé, Winter Palace, Eau de Memo. Warm, smoky, travelled. Maison Margiela · Memo.

Florian Gallo and the Chasense roster

Chasense names a perfumer on every bottle. Florian Gallo composed the award-winning Spring Tea (Longjing), Find Myself Dark Tea and ZenTea Ya; Nathalie Lorson, who also wrote Mith Silver Sparkle and Rose of Female Planet, made ZenTea Qing; Frank Voelkl (Le Labo Santal 33) made Zenmind Harmony. The Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire noses

Each scent in the Collection Extraordinaire credits its perfumer: Sidonie Lancesseur (Bois d’Amande, Moonlight Cherry), Antoine Maisondieu (California Rêverie), Nadège Le Garlantezec (Thé Amara), Nathalie Feisthauer (Gardénia Pétale), Michel Almairac (Santal Blanc, and Armani Privé Bois d’Encens). All in stock as 75 ml testers, two of them also as $44 miniatures. Van Cleef & Arpels.

Questions

Why does the perfumer matter?

Because brands change direction and perfumers do not. A nose has a recognisable hand: Epinette’s airy transparency, Durande’s photoreal food notes, Jelk’s polished classicism. If you own a bottle you love, the perfumer’s other work is the most reliable shortlist for the next one.

Are the perfumers named on the bottle?

Rarely. Chasense, To Summer and Van Cleef & Arpels credit them; Mith publishes them on its website; most European houses do not. We name the perfumer on each product page where the house has confirmed it.

Do the same perfumers really work for Thai and Chinese houses?

Yes. Mith Bangkok, To Summer and Chasense brief the same Givaudan, Firmenich, Symrise and Robertet perfumers as the European houses. The difference in price is marketing, distribution and packaging, not the person behind the formula.

How do I try several by one perfumer?

Most Mith, To Summer and Chasense scents are available as 2 ml samples on our samples page, so you can wear three Epinette or three Durande compositions for the price of a coffee each.
