China’s niche perfumery has arrived in the last five years, and it does not sound like Paris. Its houses build scents on tea, osmanthus, rice, incense and real places, briefed to the same Firmenich and Givaudan perfumers the European houses use. Almost none of it is sold outside China. We hold four of the best, and this page is the short version of each.
To Summer 观夏 — Beijing, the art house

Chasense 茶香师 — Shanghai, the tea master
One house, one subject: tea, interpreted a varietal at a time, each by a named perfumer. Spring Tea (Longjing), Comforting Oolong, Jasmine Green Tea, Matcha, Chinese Milk Tea and seventeen more. The entry line is $74 and every scent has a 2 ml sample. The Chasense page.
Soulvent 所闻 — places in a bottle

Betmay 北芒 — Shanghai, hyper-realistic

What makes Chinese niche perfume different?
The materials and the stories: tea, osmanthus, rice, incense and specific Chinese places, composed by the same French and Swiss perfumers the big houses use. The results are usually softer and more skin-close than Western niche.
Which Chinese perfume brands can I buy in Australia?
