It is the category people ask us for most after tea, usually with the words “something I can wear to the office” or “I don’t really like perfume”. The two Nudes
Two houses on two continents named their skin scent “Nude” and both are among our best sellers. To Summer Nude 裸 ($179 for 30 ml) is milky rice powder over white musk, composed by Jérôme Epinette, and the one Chinese customers describe as smelling like a freshly bathed baby; there is also an alcohol-free extrait that sits even closer. Mith Bangkok Nude, by Quentin Bisch, is the cleaner, cooler take: laundered cotton and musk, from $62 for 15 ml and as a 2 ml decant. Mith also makes Cozy Musk (warmer), Must Musk (denser, longer) and Mellow Musks (a milky vanilla musk).
Soap, paper and powder
J-Scent Paper Soap ($109) is the sheet of travel soap you kept in a pencil case as a child, lightly aldehydic and completely clean; J-Scent Yawahada (“soft skin”) is its powdery, warmer sibling. Byredo Blanche is the luxury version of fresh laundry, in the long-lasting Absolu concentration. From Soulvent, Altay’s Snow ($79) is cold powder and white flowers, and Snowy Khata adds a thread of white tea.
Warm musks
Indult Tihota ($299) is the cult vanilla musk: nothing but vanilla and musk, worn by people who own thirty bottles and reach for this one. Byredo Slow Dance is vanilla, labdanum and musk with a touch of violet. Soulvent Taro Whispers ($134) is warm taro paste and musk, and Van Cleef & Arpels Santal Blanc is creamy sandalwood rendered as skin.
Fresh, green and outdoors
Maison Margiela Replica Beach Walk ($149) is sunscreen and salt on warm skin, the most Australian scent on this page. Soulvent’s Tibet and coast series, Golden Mountain and Sacred Lake Meditation, are cold-air musks with citrus and green notes (discontinued, last bottles). Van Cleef & Arpels Thé Amara is tea, mint and rose on a musk base, also in a $44 miniature, and Butterfly Thai Kali Girl turns galangal and white flowers into a bright skin scent for summer.

Questions
What is a skin scent perfume?
A fragrance designed to smell like clean skin rather than like perfume: usually white musk, rice or milk notes, soft woods and a little powder, with a small projection so only people close to you notice it.
Do skin scents last long?
Longer than they seem. Musks cling to skin and fabric for eight hours or more, but they stay quiet, so you stop noticing your own after half an hour. Absolu and extrait versions (Byredo Blanche, To Summer’s alcohol-free Nude) last the longest.
Which skin scent is best for the office?
Mith Nude or J-Scent Paper Soap: clean, unisex, no sweetness, nobody will object. To Summer Nude if you prefer something softer and milkier.
Are these perfumes unisex?
Yes. Every bottle on this page is worn by men and women; musk and soap scents are the least gendered category in perfumery.
