Ylang-ylang, stripped of its tropical weight and set adrift on a Mediterranean breeze. Salt, sunlight, white florals.
The Scent
Most ylang-ylang fragrances come at you like a humid jungle — dense, narcotic, almost overripe. Embruns d’Ylang does the opposite. It opens with a surprising splash of salt and bright bergamot, like sea spray catching you off-guard on a coastal walk. It’s fresh before it’s floral, breezy before it’s heavy.
The heart is where ylang-ylang finally enters — creamy, yellow-petaled, but tamed. Jasmine sambac adds a clean white floral lift, clove provides a gentle spice, and honey sweetens just enough to round the edges without making things sticky. The base is soft and unobtrusive: powdery iris, clean patchouli, a trace of vanilla. The overall effect is a Mediterranean holiday — white linen, saltwater on warm skin, floral breezes through an open window. It’s ylang-ylang for people who thought they didn’t like ylang-ylang.
The Collection
L’Art & La Matière, 2019, by Thierry Wasser — Guerlain’s master perfumer from 2008 to 2020. Embruns d’Ylang was his fresh, solar take on a note Guerlain has worked with since the early 20th century. The name translates to “sea spray of ylang” — exactly what it delivers. This is the 200ml tester format.

Who It’s For
You want a white floral that doesn’t feel like a white floral. You’re drawn to the idea of ylang-ylang — exotic, creamy, iconic — but the dense, banana-custard interpretations you’ve tried put you off. This is the gateway ylang: fresh, modern, wearable even in Australian summer. The tester format makes it an accessible entry point into L’Art & La Matière.
Honest note: this is the most divisive fragrance in the current Guerlain lineup. The salty-marine accord polarizes — some find it refreshing, others synthetic. If you want a bold, indolic, “beast mode” ylang, look elsewhere. This is ylang on holiday, not ylang at the opera.
Performance
6–7 hours, soft to moderate projection. A personal-scent-bubble fragrance — people within arm’s reach will notice, but it won’t fill a room. Suited to spring and summer.
